Therapy for autistic women, by video
Therapy for women who found out late
Lumina is a one-counselor practice in Bend, Oregon. You start in writing, you get an agenda before every session, and your camera can stay off.

If you are in another state during a session, we cannot see you yet. Write to us and we will help you find someone licensed where you live.

Joumana Madani
Licensed counselor, founder of Lumina
Joumana sees autistic women of every age, by video, from her practice in Bend.
Joumana started Lumina for women who learned late in life that they are autistic, and who were tired of explaining themselves on the phone.
She keeps sessions plain and predictable: the agenda comes first, questions are specific and silence is allowed. She works with you on what a diagnosis changes, and on what it does not.

How it works
How starting works
Four steps, all in writing unless you ask for a call.
- 01
You write to us
Use the form, send a text or write an email. Tell us which days suit you, and leave medical details out.
- 02
We reply in writing
Within two business days we say whether there is an opening and what happens next.
- 03
You get the agenda
Before the first session we send a written agenda and a short list of what to set up.
How to prepare - 04
You have the session
Fifty minutes by video, with the agenda open. You can answer by voice or in the chat.
How fees work
The answers to what most people ask before a first session.
Insurance we work with
Lumina is out of network with insurance plans: you pay for each session yourself. We do not take Medicare or Medicaid. If you want someone who bills your plan, we give you the names of colleagues.
Out of network with insurance plans
No Medicare or Medicaid
If you pay yourself
You pay by card at the end of each session, including HSA and FSA cards. We give you the fee in writing before you start. A limited number of reduced-fee spots may be open: ask by message. We ask for 24 hours' notice to change an appointment, and you can do it with a message.
Receipts for reimbursement
Each month we can email you an itemized receipt (a superbill) to send to your plan, which may reimburse part of out-of-network care. It carries a diagnosis code your insurer can see. Your plan decides whether it reimburses anything, and reimbursement is not guaranteed, so ask it before you start.
An estimate in advance
If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a written good faith estimate of what your care will cost before you start. We email you one before the first session. If the final bill is $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract.
Checking your benefits
We do not check benefits, because we do not bill your plan. To find out whether your plan reimburses out-of-network mental health care, you can ask it in writing, through its member portal or secure message, before the first session.

Questions people ask first
Do I have to make a phone call to begin?
No. You can use the form, send a text or write an email. We reply in writing, and we call only if you ask us to. Reminders come by text or email, whichever you choose.
Can I keep my camera off?
Yes. Sessions can be camera on, camera off, or a picture instead of your face. You can use your voice, the chat or both, and you can change your mind during a session.
Do you take my insurance?
Lumina is out of network with insurance plans, and we do not take Medicare or Medicaid. You pay for each session yourself, and we can email a monthly receipt for you to send to your plan. The fees page has the details.
How much does it cost, and how do fees work?
You pay for each session yourself, by card, at the end of the session. We give you the fee in writing before you start, so you never learn it by phone or at the door. The fees page explains the rest.
Are you licensed where I live?
Joumana is licensed in Oregon and Washington. You need to be in one of those states during a session. If you are somewhere else, we cannot see you, and we will help you find someone licensed where you live.
What do I do in a crisis?
Call or text 988, any time, or call 911 in an emergency. Our messages are not monitored around the clock, so do not wait for us to answer.
