Questions, answered
What people ask us before they write.
Do I have to make a phone call to begin?
No. You can use the form, send a text or write an email. We reply in writing, and we call only if you ask us to. Reminders come by text or email, whichever you choose.
Can I keep my camera off?
Yes. Sessions can be camera on, camera off, or a picture instead of your face. You can use your voice, the chat or both, and you can change your mind during a session.
Do you diagnose autism?
No. Lumina offers counseling, not testing or evaluation. If you want an evaluation, we can give you the names of clinicians who do them. You do not need a diagnosis to start.
Do you take my insurance?
Lumina is out of network with insurance plans, and we do not take Medicare or Medicaid. You pay for each session yourself, and we can email a monthly receipt for you to send to your plan. The fees page has the details.
What is a superbill, and how can I use it?
A superbill is an itemized receipt with the dates and kind of each session. You send it to your plan, which may reimburse part of out-of-network care. It carries a diagnosis code your insurer can see. Your plan decides whether it reimburses anything, and reimbursement is not guaranteed.
What is a good faith estimate?
If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a written estimate of what your care will cost before you start. We email you one before the first session. If the final bill is $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract.
How much does it cost, and how do fees work?
You pay for each session yourself, by card, at the end of the session. We give you the fee in writing before you start, so you never learn it by phone or at the door. The fees page explains the rest.
Can I use an HSA or FSA card?
Yes. Most HSA and FSA cards work like any other card. Your plan administrator can say whether counseling by video qualifies for you.
What happens in the first session?
It lasts 50 minutes, by video. Before it, you get a written agenda and a short how-to-prepare page. In the session Joumana explains how she works, the limits of confidentiality and the possible risks and benefits of therapy, then follows the agenda. At the end you both decide whether to continue.
How often, and for how long?
Joumana sets the pace with you, and sessions are 50 minutes. We do not promise a number of sessions: it depends on what you want to work on.
Are you licensed where I live?
Joumana is licensed in Oregon and Washington. You need to be in one of those states during a session. If you are somewhere else, we cannot see you, and we will help you find someone licensed where you live.
What do I do in a crisis?
Call or text 988, any time, or call 911 in an emergency. Our messages are not monitored around the clock, so do not wait for us to answer.
What is confidential, and what are the limits?
What you share stays in the session. The law sets limits: if someone is at serious risk of harming themselves or another person, or if abuse of a child or an older adult is suspected, Joumana may have to tell others. She explains this in writing before you start.
Can you see my teenager?
No. Lumina sees adults, 18 and over. Write to us and we will help you find a clinician who sees teenagers.
What is your cancellation policy?
We ask for 24 hours' notice to change an appointment. You can do it with a message, and you never need to call.
