Therapy after a late diagnosis

Looking back with a new explanation

For adult women who learned they are autistic, or think they might be, and want to understand their lives with that in mind.

A late diagnosis can explain a great deal, and it can leave a lot to sort through. In sessions you decide what to look at first: how you learned to hide it, what you were told about yourself, and what you want to change now.

What to expect

What it is like, in six points

  • What sessions are like

They run 50 minutes by video. You follow the written agenda, and you can answer by voice or in the chat. Silence is allowed.

  • The method

It is talk-based counseling. Joumana explains each approach she uses, and where she trained, in the first session. If a method does not suit you, it changes.

  • What it is not

It is not a diagnosis or an evaluation, and it is not an emergency service. It does not try to make you less autistic.

  • Length and frequency

Joumana sets the pace with you. We do not promise a number of sessions.

  • The risks

Looking back can be tiring and bring up hard memories. Joumana explains the possible risks and benefits before you begin, and you can slow down at any time.

  • You pay for each session yourself, and we give you a good faith estimate in writing before you start.

Three questions about this service

What happens in the first session?

It lasts 50 minutes, by video. Before it, you get a written agenda and a short how-to-prepare page. In the session Joumana explains how she works, the limits of confidentiality and the possible risks and benefits of therapy, then follows the agenda. At the end you both decide whether to continue.

How often, and for how long?

Joumana sets the pace with you, and sessions are 50 minutes. We do not promise a number of sessions: it depends on what you want to work on.

What is confidential, and what are the limits?

What you share stays in the session. The law sets limits: if someone is at serious risk of harming themselves or another person, or if abuse of a child or an older adult is suspected, Joumana may have to tell others. She explains this in writing before you start.
